Choking!

Have you ever put any thought into the importance of knowing first aid and CPR at home ?

If you haven’t learned first aid, you definitely should.  Here’s why.

I saved my youngster’s life this week, simply because I learned first aid and CPR. I knew what to do, and how to react.

His routine is pretty simple these days: Get up, go to the washroom, get dressed with my help and then, breakfast.

That particular morning, he decided to eat a muffin. However, instead of sitting down at the table as we ALWAYS DO, he decided to get up and walk around with food in his mouth.

All I see from the corner of my eye is my son standing in the middle of the living room; not moving with a half eaten muffin in his hand.

I go to him to ask what he’s doing, when I notice the terror in his eyes, filling up with tears.

No noise from him, no sound, not even a breath.

Panic starts to settle in as I scream to my oldest to grab my phone in case I needed them to call 911.

At the same time, I grab my youngest and jam my finger in his mouth. I managed to dig out whatever was left in there, with a hook-like motion of my finger; just like I was taught in my CPR classes.

I threw as much soggy muffin as I can on the floor! Then, I patted my little one in the back to dislodge whatever else was still stuck.

Immediately, I hear a gush of air, and he starts to cry and scream. I’ve never felt so relieved to hear one of my children scream! I held him in my arms for so long after this horrible event.

Things could have gone so much worse if I hadn’t known what to do in case of a child was choking.  I learned first aid and CPR, and it managed to save the day.

Parents, if you haven’t taken basic first aid or CPR courses, I urge you to do so. Accidents happen so fast.
